Exciting Transformation Underway for Our Community's Landmark School
Modesto City Schools is thrilled to announce a significant modernization project at Modesto High School, one of California’s oldest high schools. This project marks a transformative moment for the historic campus, which has served our community for over 141 years.
Established as the first dedicated high school in Stanislaus County, Modesto High has been at its current site on 18 H Street since 1918. The school’s iconic H Street facade, featuring the historic pillars at the front, will be preserved as part of the district’s commitment to honoring its rich history. This facade was officially recognized as a City of Modesto landmark in 1995.
Funded by Measure L, the modernization project aims to blend the school’s historical significance with a future-focused design that enhances safety, learning environments, and the overall campus experience for students and staff. The project will be implemented in phases, with the primary goal of centralizing nearly all instruction on the main campus. This change will significantly reduce the need for students to cross H Street and Paradise Road, ensuring their safety.
Phase One will involve the construction of a new two-story wing housing 20 classrooms alongside a career technical education wing with three specialized classrooms. Following the completion of these new classrooms, four buildings along Rosedale Avenue are scheduled for demolition during the 2025-2026 school year.
Phase Two, also set for the 2025-2026 school year, will include the construction of a second two-story building featuring 32 additional classrooms. This phase will also introduce new parking stalls, a drop-off and pickup lane in front of the school, and a large shade canopy. Once completed, an estimated 99% of instruction will occur on the main campus, alongside the relocation of the tennis courts and baseball and softball fields.

Principal Phuc Pham-Goulart added, “Modesto High School has been a cornerstone of this community for more than a century. This modernization will ensure that we continue to provide a top-tier education to our students in a safe, modern, and inspiring environment.”
